Dr. Maxmillan Martin serves as an Associate Tutor in Geography at the University of Sussex, contributing to teaching and research focused on climate hazards and community engagement with vulnerable coastal populations in India. His interdisciplinary work develops practical marine weather forecasting solutions for artisanal fishers to enhance safety and sustainability.
His academic credentials include:
- BSc in Botany, Zoology, and Chemistry from the University of Kerala
- MSt in Forced Migration from the University of Oxford
- PhD in Geography from the University of Sussex (2016)
Specializing in climate science and disaster risk reduction, Dr. Martin co-produces localized impact-based marine weather forecasts with South Indian fishing communities through projects like 'Forecasting with Fishers'. His research extends to climate change migration dynamics in Bangladesh and Arabian Sea storm analysis, documented in the film 'Crashing Waves'.
Research funding has been secured from Sussex Sustainability, the Royal Geographical Society, Sussex Innovation, and the Climate and Development Knowledge Network. He currently leads the Red Cross Global Disaster Preparedness Center project 'Fishers on the first mile' in Thiruvananthapuram and collaborates with fishers via Radio Monsoon (radiomonsoon.in), a Sussex Innovation-funded initiative exchanging scientific forecasts and traditional knowledge.
As a member of the Sussex Climate Science and Society group, he teaches undergraduate courses including the India Field Class on Kerala coastal vulnerability assessments, Quantitative and Analytical Skills, and Environmental Perspectives on Development.
