Fernando Barrio

Fernando Barrio is a Professor of Sustainable Business Law and Policy at Queen Mary University of London’s School of Business and Management, where he also serves as Director of the BSc Business with Law program and QMUL’s UN Climate Change Focal Point. He holds a PhD in International Cooperation from Nagoya University, Japan, and advanced degrees in Law, Peace Studies, and Global Business. His career spans academia, policy, and international development across Argentina, Japan, Thailand, and the UK.

Prior roles include Ordinary Professor of Cyberlaw at Argentina’s Universidad Nacional de Rio Negro, Argentine Government advisor, and Rotary Peace Fellow. His research focuses on digital technologies’ legal implications for sustainability, climate change adaptation, and business ethics, with regional expertise in Sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia, and India. He leads UN-backed projects on climate policy implementation and chairs Queen Mary’s Sustainability Committee.

Teaching innovations include integrating UN SDGs and AI into legal education, recognized by awards such as the 2008 UK Law Teacher of the Year. His 50+ countries of public engagement include UNFCCC COP delegations, WIPO advisory roles, and global conferences on IT law. He also holds certifications as a Scuba Diving and Emergency First Response Instructor.
