Jun. Prof. Dr. Felipe Fernández is an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Freiburg. His research focuses on political anthropology, state anthropology, and extractivism in Latin America, particularly Colombia and Bolivia. He holds a PhD from Freie Universität Berlin (2022), awarded summa cum laude, and has held research positions at institutions in Argentina, Ecuador, and Germany.
Education highlights include a Master’s in Interdisciplinary Latin American Studies (2018) and undergraduate studies in Social and Cultural Anthropology at Freie Universität Berlin and Universidad de los Andes (2011–2014). His work explores state dynamics, infrastructural violence, and environmental governance, with a focus on water systems and lithium extraction in marginalized regions.
Recent publications analyze the interplay of violence, infrastructure, and state practices in Buenaventura, Colombia. His research has been supported by DFG-funded graduate programs and grants. Fernández is affiliated with the Arnold-Bergstraesser-Institut and contributes to interdisciplinary collaborations on temporalities of future and spatial politics.
