Professor Felicity Thomas serves as Professor of Culture and Health Inequalities in the Department of Health and Community Sciences at the University of Exeter and directs the WHO Collaborating Centre for Culture and Health. Her work centers on understanding and addressing health and social care inequalities through interdisciplinary analysis of cultural contexts including societal values, working practices, and regulatory frameworks, with specific focus on marginalized populations.
Her research spans social determinants of health, poverty-inclusivity-wellbeing intersections, mental health services, and cultural studies, employing narrative, ethnographic, and engaged methodologies. She investigates how cultures intersect to impact health delivery systems, particularly examining poverty-mental health-medicalisation dynamics and social care improvements for families with complex needs through active collaboration with service users and care providers.
Professor Thomas actively supervises PhD and Masters students while engaging in consultancy, policy development, external examining, and institutional reviews. Her professional activities emphasize translating research into ethical practice shifts within health and social care systems.
She contributes to multiple research networks including the Wellcome Centre for Cultures and Environments of Health, Children & Young People Wellbeing @Exeter, and Routes @Exeter focusing on migration and displacement. As WHO Collaborating Centre Director, she leads initiatives advancing Sustainable Development Goals 1 (No Poverty), 3 (Good Health), 5 (Gender Equality), and 10 (Reduced Inequalities) through culture-centered health interventions.
