Federico Farini

Prof Federico Farini is a Professor of Sociology at the University of Northampton, leading the Centre for Psychology and Sociological Sciences. His academic career includes roles at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Middlesex University, and the University of Suffolk. With a PhD in Sociology of Intercultural Communication (2008), he specializes in migrant integration, intercultural education, and social justice.

Education: BA in Italian & Philosophy (University of Bologna), MA in Social History (University of Bologna), MA in Social Anthropology (University of Modena and Reggio Emilia), and a PhD in Sociology of Intercultural Communication (2008).

Research focuses on migrant children’s education, intercultural communication, and policy evaluation. He leads EU-funded projects like Child-UP (Hybrid Integration of Migrant Children) and SHARMED (Intercultural Education via Digital Tools). His work promotes UN SDG 4 (Quality Education) and has been recognized by SpringerNature.

Teaching spans research methods across undergraduate/postgraduate levels. He has supervised numerous PhD students and contributed to program development. Awards include Fellowships from the Higher Education Academy and Royal Society of Arts.

Grants: Secured £530k in research funding, including EU projects. Active in networks like Trust Dynamics (Denmark) and Laboratory for Interaction and Mediation (Italy). Serves as a reviewer for UNESCO, European Commission, and national governments.

Labs/Teams: Coordinates the Unit of Assessment 21 (Sociology) for REF2021. Leads interdisciplinary initiatives in early childhood education and health sciences.
