Federico De Musso is an Assistant Professor at Leiden University’s Institute of Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology, affiliated with the Social and Behavioural Sciences faculty. He coordinates the Master’s Visual Ethnography Specialization and holds a PhD from McGill University (2021), with additional MA degrees from the University of Bologna and SOAS, University of London. His research focuses on multimodal anthropology, political ecology, and the anthropology of food, particularly examining themes of environmental and social exhaustion in sectors like energy production and videogame industries. He has pioneered interactive documentaries and digital ethnography methods, contributing to projects like the Foodcitizens i-doc and Voyage to Corona.
His work bridges traditional ethnographic practices with digital tools, emphasizing mediation, self-representation, and the role of social networks in cultural identity formation. Recent collaborations include co-authoring Audiovisual and Digital Ethnography: A Practical and Theoretical Guide (2021) and organizing workshops on audiovisual methods in global health research. Federico actively participates in interdisciplinary initiatives such as the Nordic Sustainable Food Systems network, exploring agro-marine systems and policy frameworks.
His research outputs span academic articles, interactive media projects, and edited volumes, reflecting a commitment to innovative, practice-based methodologies. He teaches courses in cultural anthropology, development sociology, and visual ethnography, integrating fieldwork simulations and digital media practices into pedagogy.
