Benjamin Fogarty-Valenzuela is an Assistant Professor of Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology at Leiden University. He holds a PhD from Princeton University and was a Mansueto Institute Fellow at the University of Chicago. His research focuses on multimodal ethnography, visual anthropology, and the intersection of drug policy with cultural practices. Key works include Art of Captivity, a bilingual photo-ethnography examining Guatemala's Pentecostal rehabilitation centers, and a forthcoming book on youth activism in Brazil. His work has been supported by the National Academy of Education/Spencer Foundation and Open Society Foundations.
Teaching responsibilities include courses on Cultural Anthropology and Visual Ethnography at the MSc level. He previously convened the Chicago Ethnography Incubator and serves as Current Anthropology's inaugural Visual Editor. Research interests span media politics, social movements, and the anthropology of time.
Notable awards include the 2020 Current Anthropology Visual Anthropology Competition and a KIEM grant (2024) for the 'Picturing Scholasticide' project. His work bridges academic research with creative outputs, including exhibitions and film projects documenting marginalized communities.
