Professor Fearghal McGarry is a leading scholar of modern Irish history at Queen's University Belfast. He holds a Chair in the School of History, Anthropology, Philosophy and Politics, specializing in 20th-century Irish history, political violence, and historical memory. His research explores inter-war radicalism, the Irish Revolution, and the global influences on Ireland's independence struggle. He co-edited Ireland 1922 and led AHRC-funded projects like A Global History of the Irish Revolution.
Teaching includes modules on the Irish Revolution, modern history theory, and public history. He advises major cultural projects such as the National Museum of Ireland’s Changing Ireland exhibition and An Post’s GPO Witness History museum. Awards include Fellowship of the Royal Historical Society (2004) and Royal Irish Academy membership (2019).
His recent focus includes the legacy of the Irish Civil War and the role of film in public history. Over 79 publications span books, articles, and edited volumes, emphasizing Ireland’s complex political and cultural history.
