Dr Colin Reid is a Senior Lecturer in Modern British and Irish History and Director of Postgraduate Studies at the University of Sheffield's School of History, Philosophy and Digital Humanities. He holds a BA, MA, and PhD from Queen's University Belfast. His research focuses on 19th- and 20th-century Irish political, cultural, and intellectual history, particularly constitutional nationalism, unionism, and the history of political thought. He is currently completing a book on ideas of representative government in Ireland under the Union (1798-1922) and explores British radical political culture between the French Revolution and WWI.
His qualifications include Fellowships from the Royal Historical Society (FRHistS) and the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). Reid has supervised numerous PhD students on topics ranging from historical crime records to the Northern Ireland peace process. He teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses on Irish, British, and European history, including modules on the Troubles, republicanism, and radical movements.
Reid's grants include an AHRC Leadership Fellowship (2020-21). His research hubs include the Political Engagement and Transmission of Ideas groups. He collaborates with community organizations like the Tyneside Irish Centre and contributes to blogs such as History Matters. His work bridges academic and public history, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to political and cultural analysis.
