Dr. Farrell O’Gorman is a Professor of English and Chair of the English department at Belmont Abbey College. He holds a Ph.D. and M.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a B.A. from the University of Notre Dame. His research focuses on American and Irish literature, with a particular emphasis on Catholic themes, Gothic narratives, and the intersection of literature with cultural and moral questions. He teaches courses on American literature, Christianity and culture, and creative writing, including a May intensive study abroad program on Ireland.
His scholarly work explores topics such as Flannery O’Connor’s legacy, Cormac McCarthy’s narrative techniques, and the cultural significance of Southern Gothic literature. He has published extensively, including monographs like Catholicism and American Borders in the Gothic Literary Imagination (2017) and Peculiar Crossroads: Flannery O’Connor, Walker Percy, and Catholic Vision in Postwar Southern Fiction (2004). His articles analyze themes like eugenics rhetoric, radical individualism, and the role of religion in shaping literary narratives.
Dr. O’Gorman serves as the Southeast regional representative for the National Conference on Christianity & Literature and represents Belmont Abbey College in the Lilly Fellows Program network. He emphasizes the humanities’ role in addressing life’s profound questions and fostering intellectual engagement through literature.
