Jessica Hooten Wilson serves as Associate Professor of Creative Writing at John Brown University in northwest Arkansas. She is a leading Flannery O'Connor scholar with expertise in Christian literary studies and Southern Gothic tradition. Wilson was selected to prepare O'Connor's unfinished novel Why Do the Heathen Rage? for publication, working through approximately 400 manuscript pages.
Her research interests include:
- Flannery O'Connor's theological vision
- Saints' lives and hagiography
- Spiritual formation through literature
- Southern literary tradition
- Violence and redemption in fiction
- Reading as spiritual practice
Wilson's work explores how literature functions iconically—inviting readers into transformative encounters rather than merely providing information. She emphasizes 'standing under the text' rather than attempting to master it, allowing literature to 'read us' rather than us consuming it.
Her scholarly achievements include the award-winning book Giving the Devil His Due, which examines demonic authority in O'Connor and Dostoyevsky. Wilson has also presented at Biola University's Center for Christian Thought and contributed to public scholarship through numerous podcast interviews exploring faith, literature, and spiritual formation.
