Dr. Fan Zhang is a Senior Research Scientist at Honda Research Institute EU and a Visiting Researcher at Imperial College London. Previously, he served as a Research Associate in the Personal Robotics Lab at Imperial College London (2021–2024) and held the Eric and Wendy Schmidt AI in Science Postdoctoral Fellowship (funded by Schmidt Futures). He earned his Ph.D. in Robotics from Imperial College London in 2021, advised by Prof. Yiannis Demiris, with a thesis on Perception and Manipulation for Robot-Assisted Dressing.
His research focuses on machine learning algorithms for general robot manipulation, particularly in assistive robotics and human-robot interaction. Key projects include robot-assisted dressing for impaired patients, multisensory brain-computer interfaces, and trustworthy autonomous systems. His work has been recognized with awards such as the UK Best PhD in Robotics Award 2020 and the 2025 Best Research Paper (Early Career Researcher) from TAS Hub.
Dr. Zhang has contributed to high-impact journals like Science Robotics and IEEE Transactions on Robotics, and his research has been covered by media outlets including Bloomberg, The Times, and New Scientist. He actively participates in academic activities, including organizing workshops on assistive robotics and serving as a reviewer for top-tier conferences and journals.
