Fan Chen is an Associate Professor at the Girard School of Business within Merrimack College. His expertise focuses on the ownership and organizational structures of mutual funds, hedge funds, and portfolio management challenges. He holds a Ph.D. in Finance from Louisiana State University, an M.S.F. from Boston College, and an M.B.A. from Arizona State University.
Chen's research examines agency conflicts in asset management, governance mechanisms, and regulatory frameworks. His work has influenced SEC policies by addressing issues like fee hikes and inferior fund performance. Key areas include portfolio manager behavior, fund management conflicts, and board accountability.
His recent publications analyze managerial skills beyond traditional performance metrics and the implications of portfolio managers handling multiple fund types. Earlier work explored conflicts arising from concurrent management of mutual/hedge funds and asset sales in the fund industry.
