Her work focuses on mental health, particularly Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), autoimmune diseases, and the psychological impacts of chronic conditions. She has contributed to over 50 peer-reviewed publications and led/co-investigated two major research projects funded by the MRC. Her research emphasizes remote sensing technologies for disease monitoring and qualitative studies on loneliness in aging populations.
Key projects include analyzing depression-related multimorbidity mechanisms (MRC-funded, 2019–2021) and piloting interventions for physical health in inflammatory arthritis (2014–2015). Her work addresses UN Sustainable Development Goals related to good health and well-being (SDG 3). Collaborations span international institutions, with recent studies involving teams in Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands.
Dr. Matcham's recent publications explore topics like biopsychosocial responses to pandemic lockdowns in MDD patients and the use of wearable sensors for symptom tracking. She advocates for holistic approaches beyond clinical biomarkers, such as illness perception studies in autoimmune diseases.
