Fabian Wiesemüller

Fabian Wiesemüller is a PhD student at the Department of Aeronautics, Imperial College London, and a member of the newly established Centre for Robotics. His research focuses on developing biodegradable eco-robots for environmental monitoring, adhering to circular economy principles. He holds a BSc and MSc in Mechanical Engineering from ETH Zurich and was a visiting student researcher at Caltech’s aerospace department. Previously, he contributed to the Academic Space Initiative Switzerland, working on experimental rocket design.

His research interests revolve around interdisciplinary robotics and materials science, particularly in creating bio-hybrid and biodegradable aerial robots. He explores the integration of biodegradable materials like cellulose and biopolymers into robotic systems to ensure they decompose harmlessly after use, contributing nutrients back to the environment.

His publications span eco-robotics, biodegradable materials, and sustainable engineering solutions. Recent work highlights include benthic monitoring systems, space-borne deployable structures, and underwater robotic designs. These studies emphasize the intersection of environmental science and robotics to address ecological challenges.

Fabian’s involvement in the Centre for Robotics includes shaping its academic trajectory, leveraging collaborations with Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Sciences and Technology (Empa). His future aspirations aim to merge materials science, robotics, and aeronautics in professional settings, prioritizing interdisciplinary teams for innovative problem-solving.
