Eyal Weizman is Professor of Spatial and Visual Cultures and Director of the Centre for Research Architecture at Goldsmiths, University of London, and serves as a Visiting Research Scholar at Princeton University. As an architect and academic, he founded Forensic Architecture in 2011 to provide architectural evidence in human rights cases and war crimes trials, with work exhibited at HKW Berlin and featured in Al Jazeera documentaries.
Education:
- Studied architecture at the Architectural Association in London
- PhD in Architecture from London Consortium/Birkbeck College
Research Interests: Weizman pioneers forensic architecture as a methodology for investigating state violence and human rights violations through spatial analysis. His work critically examines architecture's role in political conflict, occupation regimes, and border enforcement, with emphasis on how spatial configurations become evidentiary tools in legal contexts and shape geopolitical realities in contested territories.
Scientific Awards:
- James Stirling Memorial Lecture Prize (2006-2007)
- Prince Claus Prize for Architecture (2010, for DAAR)
Advising and Grants: Through the Centre for Research Architecture, Weizman mentors graduate researchers in spatial investigation methodologies. His projects including Forensic Architecture and DAAR have secured funding from cultural institutions and human rights organizations for investigations presented at the UN General Assembly and in international war crime proceedings, though specific grant mechanisms are not detailed in source materials.
Labs and Teams: Weizman directs the Centre for Research Architecture at Goldsmiths as an experimental research laboratory, while leading Forensic Architecture as a multi-disciplinary team of architects, artists, and scientists. He co-founded DAAR (Decolonizing Architecture Art Residency) in Beit Sahour/Palestine with Sandi Hilal and Alessandro Petti as an architectural collective exploring spatial resistance in occupied territories.
