Eva-Maria Kieninger

Eva-Maria Kieninger is Professor of German and European Private Law and Private International Law at the University of Wuerzburg, where she has held a faculty position since 2001. She previously served as Dean of the Faculty of Law (2014-2016) and was a Member of the Council of the University of Passau (2012-2016).

Her educational background includes law studies at the University of Passau and King's College, London, where she received support from the Cusanus Foundation for highly talented students. She passed both State Exams in Law with excellent grades - First State Exam at Passau (1990) and Second State Exam in Munich (1993). Her academic career progressed from Research Assistant positions at Augsburg University through roles at the Free University of Berlin and Max Planck Institute before her professorship at Wuerzburg.

Professor Kieninger's research spans German private law with specialization in property law, secured transactions, contract law, and company law. She has made significant contributions to sustainability in private law, private international law, European private law harmonization, and comparative legal studies. Her scholarly work bridges theoretical frameworks with practical applications in European legal contexts.

She has been recognized with prestigious appointments including membership in the German Council of Private International Law since 2003, the International Academy of Comparative Law since 2006, and the International Academy of Commercial and Consumer Law since 2006. In 2018, she became an Ordinary Member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences, and in 2019 co-founded the European Association of Private International Law.

Professor Kieninger maintains an active international presence through visiting professorships at Jean Moulin University Lyon III, Radboud University Nijmegen, and Dresden University of Technology. Despite receiving offers from other German universities, she chose to remain at Wuerzburg for family reasons. She is an Ordinary Member of the Academy of Europe (Membership Number: 5299, elected 2020) and maintains her academic homepage at the University of Wuerzburg's law faculty website.
