Eugene Won is a Senior Research Associate in Animal Science and Academic Coordinator at Shoals Marine Laboratory, Cornell University. He also serves as a Faculty Fellow at the Atkinson Center for a Sustainable Future. His work focuses on developing sustainable aquaculture feeds to reduce reliance on wild fisheries and improve food security. Won’s research integrates protein recovery from seafood byproducts, invasive carp utilization, and insect-based feed innovations. He leads a feed development lab and operates recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) for growth performance studies.
Won collaborates with industry partners (e.g., River Road Research, Hudson Valley Fisheries) and academic teams across disciplines, including plant science and environmental engineering. His projects include aquaponics systems to recycle fish wastewater for crop growth and machine learning-driven 'smart feeders' to optimize aquaculture efficiency. He actively engages in outreach through roles with NY Sea Grant, the Great Lakes Aquaculture Collaborative, and the Striper Hub consortium.
Teaching responsibilities include courses in Fish Physiology and Sustainable Food Systems, alongside advising undergraduate researchers in marine sciences. As Academic Coordinator of Shoals Marine Lab, he oversees field research programs and student training in the Gulf of Maine. Won’s interdisciplinary approach bridges aquaculture innovation, environmental stewardship, and industry collaboration to address global seafood demand sustainably.
