Ethan Menchinger is an Honorary Research Fellow in the Department of History at the University of Manchester. His work focuses on Ottoman intellectual and cultural history, particularly during the early modern period (1600-1800). He specializes in theology, philosophy, and historical writing, examining how ideas evolved at the dawn of modernity. Menchinger holds a PhD from the University of Michigan (2014) and has held postdoctoral fellowships at the Forum Transregionale Studien/Berlin (2014/15) and visiting positions at the University of Toronto and University of Michigan. He is a core member of the ERC-funded GHOST project exploring Ottoman supernatural traditions (1500-1800).
Teaching includes undergraduate courses on Ottoman encounters in early modern Europe, the making of the modern mind, and culture in Ottoman society. He also advises postgraduate students on research methods and topics like war and political boundaries. His publications span monographs with Cambridge University Press, edited volumes, and articles in journals like the Journal of the History of Ideas and Journal of Ottoman Studies.
Menchinger's research bridges theological analysis with political thought, emphasizing conceptual innovation in pre-modern contexts. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals through historical scholarship that contextualizes cultural and intellectual diversity.
