David Katz is Professor of History at Brandeis University, specializing in intellectual history, religious history, and the early modern period (1500-1900). His research examines cultural perceptions, religious identities, and cross-cultural encounters, particularly between Britain and the Ottoman Empire.
His major research areas include:
- British perceptions of Turkey and the Ottoman Empire
- Jewish history and religious identity formation
- Cross-cultural encounters in the early modern Mediterranean
- History of religious thought and secularization
- Representations of Islam in Western thought
Recent publications analyze historical representations of Turkey in British imagination, translation dynamics between Arabic and Hebrew literatures, and the evolution of Jewish identity in America. His work combines intellectual history with cultural analysis to examine how societies construct representations of 'the other'.
Professor Katz has served as Chair of Brandeis's Interdepartmental Program in History of Ideas and on the Israeli National Archives Commission. He currently leads research projects on cultural translation and religious identity formation.
