David Shyovitz

David Shyovitz is an Associate Professor of History at Northwestern University and Director of the Crown Family Center for Jewish and Israel Studies. His research focuses on medieval European intellectual and cultural history, particularly Jewish history and Jewish-Christian relations. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania (2011).

Shyovitz's research interests include medieval Ashkenaz, Jewish-Christian interactions, the history of science and medicine, and religious history. His book A Remembrance of His Wonders: Nature and the Supernatural in Medieval Ashkenaz won the John Nicholas Brown Prize (2021). His current project explores the representation of Jews and animals in medieval thought.

He teaches courses on the Crusades, Jewish history, medieval messianic movements, and the history of monsters and the occult. His affiliations include the Crown Center for Jewish and Israel Studies and the Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies. Awards include the Van Courtlandt Elliott Prize (2016) and multiple fellowships for Jewish studies research.

Shyovitz's work bridges historical analysis with interdisciplinary approaches to medieval intellectual culture, emphasizing how religious, cultural, and scientific ideas shaped Jewish and Christian communities in Europe.
