Dr. Esther Sumner is an Associate Professor in Sedimentology at the University of Southampton's Ocean and Earth Science department. Her research focuses on understanding the dynamics of seafloor sediment avalanches, addressing hazards to infrastructure, sediment transport pathways, and reconstructing past environmental conditions through sedimentary records. She combines direct seafloor monitoring, experimental modeling, and field studies to investigate modern and ancient systems.
Education: MSci in Geology (University of Bristol, 2005), PhD in Earth Sciences (University of Bristol, 2009). Postdoctoral experience includes roles at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton, University of Leeds, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute.
Current research projects include leading a NERC-funded consortium on submarine geohazards and coordinating international efforts to monitor active turbidity currents. She teaches modules such as Sedimentary Systems and Processes and leads field classes. Supervises PhD student Morgan Taylor Wolfe.
Key contributions include advancing understanding of submarine channel evolution, organic carbon fluxes in fjords, and turbidity current behaviors. Active in interdisciplinary collaborations through the Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute.
