Professor Stephen Roberts is a faculty member at the University of Southampton’s Department of Ocean and Earth Science. His research focuses on understanding ore deposit formation mechanisms, particularly for copper, cobalt, zinc, and gold. Recent work emphasizes the Zambia Copperbelt’s world-class deposits and seafloor mineralization processes at sites like the Mid-Cayman Trough and Brothers Volcano (Kermadec Arc). He leads multiple NERC-funded projects investigating ultra-mafic mineral resources, cobalt geochemistry, and caldera collapse impacts on hydrothermal systems. Current supervision includes PhD student Christian Star Bishop in Ocean & Earth Science.
Research interests span hydrothermal vent systems, metalliferous sediment geochemistry, and the application of fluid-rock interaction studies to ore genesis. Recent publications (2017-2023) address topics ranging from rare earth element extraction from seafloor deposits to platinum-group mineral dynamics in porphyry systems. Roberts collaborates internationally on projects funded by NERC, EU initiatives, and industrial partnerships.
Key technical contributions include advancing methodologies for analyzing submarine mineralization mechanisms and developing frameworks to predict ore-forming conditions in arc and mid-ocean ridge settings. His work bridges experimental geochemistry with field-based observations to advance economic geology applications.
