Esmée Hanna is a Reader (Associate Professor) in the School of Allied Health Sciences at De Montfort University, within the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. Her research focuses on the intersections of health, gender, and the body, with a strong emphasis on qualitative methodologies and applied outcomes. She is an NIHR Advanced Fellow (2020–2024) leading research on improving patient preparation for amputation surgery and has led numerous projects on male infertility and fatherhood.
- Education: PhD in Sociology from the University of Leeds, MA in Social Research from the University of Leeds, BA (Hons) in Sociology from the University of Warwick.

Her research explores lived experiences, particularly through digital and visual methods, focusing on how men navigate health challenges such as infertility and amputation. She examines emotional labor, stigma, and the social construction of health issues, often in collaboration with patients, healthcare providers, and third-sector organizations. Her work emphasizes patient dignity, especially in the context of limb disposal after amputation, advocating for ethical and patient-centered practices.
Her recent publications span high-impact journals in sociology, health, and gender studies, revealing consistent themes in men's health, reproductive issues, and workplace wellbeing. Her research often highlights the gendered dimensions of health, particularly how masculinity influences help-seeking, emotional expression, and identity.
Scientific Awards:
- Finalist in Fast Track Impact Unsung Impact Awards 2019
She has secured significant external funding from the NIHR, ESRC, and CITB for projects evaluating health interventions and community programs. She has advised on and contributed to numerous consultancy projects for organizations including Co-op Legal Services, Legal & General, and American Express. Her collaborative work includes evaluations of fatherhood initiatives and mental health programs for men.
She is affiliated with the Institute of Allied Health Sciences Research (IAHSR) and the Centre for Reproduction Research (CRR) at De Montfort University.
