Ernest Benz is an Associate Professor of History at Smith College, specializing in social history with a focus on family limitation, migration, marriage patterns, mortality, inheritance, and women's work. His research includes studies on rural and urban Jewish families in Baden from 1800 to the Holocaust, as well as the 1848 revolution and church-state conflicts. He teaches courses on world history, European surveys, the French Revolution, the Holocaust, and intellectual history.
Education: Ph.D., M.A., and B.A. from the University of Toronto.
His current research explores Jewish family histories in Baden, combining demographic and social analysis. Despite a broad teaching portfolio, no grants or awards are explicitly listed. He is on sabbatical during Spring 2025.
