Howard Tzvi Adelman is an Associate Professor in the Department of Jewish Studies and cross-appointed in the Department of History at Queen’s University, Kingston. He holds a Ph.D. from Brandeis University (1985), an M.A. from the Jewish Theological Seminary (1977), and a B.A. from Cornell University (1974). His research focuses on Jewish History, particularly in early modern Italy, gender studies, and interfaith relations.
Adelman’s work examines Jewish family negotiations, women’s roles in Jewish society, and rabbinic responses to cultural and scientific challenges. He has taught extensively at Queen’s, Smith College, and institutions in Israel, emphasizing courses on Jewish history, historiography, and religious practices. Notable awards include the Harvard University Starr Fellowship (2005) and Queen’s Honorary Convocation Speaker (2011).
His publications include studies on Leon Modena, Jewish marriage disputes, and gendered religious practices. His research often bridges social history, textual criticism, and cultural analysis, with a focus on early modern Jewish communities in Venice and Italy.
