Research focuses on representation gaps in Canadian politics, analyzing barriers to political participation faced by women, racialized minorities, and youth. Current projects investigate diversity in municipal governance and Black Canadians' political experiences. Methodologically, Tolley employs mixed-methods approaches including large-N data collection and community-partnered qualitative studies.
Recent publications analyze gendered and racialized media framing of political candidates, intersectional barriers to candidate nomination, and youth underrepresentation in legislatures. This work develops new frameworks for understanding how identity markers influence political opportunity structures.
Awards:

- Donald Smiley Prize for best book in Canadian politics (2017)
She leads the Black on the Ballot research initiative documenting Black Canadians' political experiences through podcast narratives and community engagement.
