Dr. Erin Hanson is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry and National Center for Forensic Science (Biological Evidence Section) at the University of Central Florida, with a secondary joint appointment to the Violence Against Women faculty cluster. She holds a BSc and MSc in Forensic Science and a PhD in Biomedical Science from UCF, plus a graduate certificate in Forensic Genetic Genealogy.
Her research program advances forensic molecular genetics through six key areas: 1) body fluid identification via RNA profiling, 2) optimized male DNA recovery in sexual assault evidence, 3) rapid DNA analysis, 4) trace biological evidence characterization, 5) single-cell analysis, and 6) forensic investigative genetic genealogy (FIGG). Her work aims to enhance evidentiary value in challenging forensic contexts.
Dr. Hanson teaches undergraduate Forensic Biochemistry courses and mentors students through UCF's Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) initiative. She serves professional organizations including AAFS, ISFG, and APG, and co-organizes European collaborative exercises on RNA profiling for body fluid identification.
