Erin Benay is an Associate Professor of Art History, Director of Undergraduate Studies, and Distinguished Scholar in the Public Humanities at Case Western Reserve University. Her research focuses on early modern Italian art and global cultural exchanges, particularly between India and Europe. She holds a Ph.D. from Rutgers University (2009) and has taught at SUNY Oswego and Marlboro College before joining CWRU in 2012. Her work bridges academic scholarship with community engagement through initiatives like the Baroque Without Boundaries digital project and the Graduate Certificate in Public Humanities.
Her key publications include Italy by Way of India: Translating Art and Devotion in the Early Modern World (2021), exploring Indian-European artistic exchanges, and Exporting Caravaggio (2017), analyzing art mobility. She co-founded Engaged Art History, an organization promoting community-based methodologies. Recent projects include the Pressing Matters grant supporting printmaking workshops for Cleveland teens and co-curating exhibitions at the Cleveland Museum of Art.
Benay has received multiple grants including NEH fellowships and the Samuel H. Kress Grant. She was awarded the John S. Diekhoff Award for graduate teaching excellence (2017). Her research and teaching emphasize global perspectives, material culture, and public-facing scholarship.
Professional service includes roles at the Currier Museum of Art and Morgan Library. Upcoming projects include a 2024-25 exhibition on Karamu House prints, highlighting African-American art in the Midwest.
