Dr Amanda Hilliam is a Lecturer in the Department of History of Art at the University of York, specializing in early modern Italian art with a focus on Carlo Crivelli and Adriatic cultural exchange. Her research examines the intersection of art making, theory, and religious devotion, informed by technical art history and curatorial practice. She holds a PhD from Oxford Brookes University (2020) and has held fellowships at I Tatti (Harvard) and the National Gallery of Art, Washington. Recent projects include a monograph on Carlo Crivelli (Reaktion Books, 2024) and co-curation of the exhibition Carlo Crivelli: Shadows on the Sky at Ikon Gallery, Birmingham.
Education: BA (Bristol), MSt (Oxford), PhD (Oxford Brookes). Research interests include intermediality, drapery studies, and the agency of materials in Renaissance art. She has curated exhibitions at the National Gallery of Art and contributed to Wealth and Beauty: Pier Francesco Foschi and Painting in Renaissance Florence. Awards include the Sir Denis Mahon Essay Prize and grants from the Samuel H. Kress Foundation.
Teaching focuses on art history methodologies, museum studies, and skills-based learning. She currently serves as Careers Employability Coordinator and Library Officer in her department.
