Emily Sparkes is a lecturer and PhD researcher at the Royal College of Art's School of Arts & Humanities, exploring painting's relationship with digital networks. Her practice-led research examines how humor and new materialities emerge at the intersection of painting and internet culture, drawing on Karen Barad's agential realism.
With a BA in Fine Art and MA in Queer Studies from Birmingham City University, Sparkes has taught at multiple UK institutions including Oxford Brookes University and Birmingham City University. Her work has been exhibited internationally, with solo shows in Norway and group exhibitions at Southwark Park Galleries and Ikon Gallery.
She has received significant funding including LAHP Research Support (2021, 2020, 2018) and the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant (2017). Her upcoming participation includes the 2022/23 Turps Studio Programme.
