Elina Gertsman is a Professor at the Department of Art History and Art at Case Western Reserve University. She holds the Andrew W. Mellon Professor in the Humanities title and was named Distinguished University Professor in 2023, the university's highest honor. Her research focuses on medieval art, particularly in image theory, materiality, and multi-sensory reception, with notable work on the macabre, abstraction, and theriomorphic imagery.
Her recent publications include Hypothèse abstraite (2025), Animalities (2025), and Scent and Sense in Medieval Material Culture (2025). Her work has been recognized with prestigious awards such as the Charles Rufus Morey Award (2022) and John Nicholas Brown Prize (2014). She has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and ACLS, and is a Fellow of the Medieval Academy (2022).
