Benjamin Anderson is an Associate Professor at Cornell University, holding appointments in the Department of History of Art and Visual Studies and the Department of Classics. His research focuses on Byzantine art, Mediterranean cultures from antiquity to the present, and the reception of ancient imagery in medieval states.
- Education: Ph.D. from Bryn Mawr College
Research Interests: He specializes in Byzantine art history, urban archaeology, and the epistemology of antiquarian practices. His work bridges Byzantine studies, Ottoman Empire interactions, and critical historiography.
Scientific Awards:
- Charles Rufus Morey Book Award (College Art Association)
- Karen Gould Prize in Art History (Medieval Academy of America)
Grants & Leadership: Supported by fellowships from CASVA, DAAD, IAS Princeton, and KHI Florence. He served as Director of Graduate Studies at Cornell and currently chairs the Gennadius Library Program Committee at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens.
