Dr. Rager specializes in 19th- and early 20th-century British and European art, with a focus on Edward Burne-Jones. Her research spans Pre-Raphaelitism, Aestheticism, the Arts & Crafts Movement, the history of photography, art and medicine, and decolonial approaches to art history. She explores intersections of art with eco-criticism, environmental justice, and object-driven social narratives across media.
Her publications, including the 2022 book The Radical Vision of Edward Burne-Jones and co-edited catalogues like Edwardian Opulence (2012), reflect her expertise in Victorian and Edwardian art, Pictorialist photography, and critical museum studies. Research trends emphasize decolonizing art history, medical humanities, and the legacy of imperialism.

Dr. Rager mentors students interested in European art of the long nineteenth century, particularly those exploring ecocriticism, decolonization, medical humanities, and cross-media social art history. She contributed to the 2015 Shadows and Dreams exhibition at the Cleveland Museum of Art and developed a digital gallery tour funded by the Mellon Foundation Grant for Collections Seminars (2019).
