Erika Kothe serves as Professor for Microbial Communication at Friedrich Schiller University Jena since 2012, previously holding the Professorship for Microbial Phytopathology at the same institution from 1997 to 2012.
Her academic foundation includes:
- Diplom (Biology) from Philipps University of Marburg (1984)
- Doctoral degree (Dr. rer. nat.) from Philipps University of Marburg (1988)
- Habilitation in Genetics and Mycology from Philipps University of Marburg (1997)
Professor Kothe's research investigates microbial communication systems through three primary lenses: genomic analysis of the basidiomycete Schizophyllum commune, settlement strategies of ectomycorrhizal fungi in symbiotic relationships with plants, and bio-geo interactions where streptomycetes mediate mineral transformations in heavy metal-contaminated environments. Her integrative approach combines molecular biology, environmental microbiology, and 'omics' technologies to decode communication mechanisms within microbial communities.
She directs the Microbial Communication working group headquartered at Neugasse 25 in Jena, where her team employs advanced genomic, transcriptomic, and proteomic methodologies to dissect fungal-bacterial-plant interaction networks and their ecological implications.
