Rytas J. Vilgalys is a Professor of Biology and Professor in Molecular Genetics and Microbiology at Duke University, affiliated with Trinity College of Arts & Sciences. His research bridges traditional and modern mycology, focusing on fungal systematics, evolution, ecology, and genomics. He has pioneered genomic approaches in fungal studies and leads the Vilgalys Mycology Lab, known for its work on ectomycorrhizal fungi, plant-fungal interactions, and fungal biodiversity.
Education:
- Ph.D., Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1985
- M.S., Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1981
- B.A., State University of New York at Geneseo, 1978
Research Interests: Vilgalys’ work spans fungal systematics, evolutionary genomics, symbiotic relationships (e.g., Suillus-Pinaceae interactions), and environmental microbiology. He integrates fieldwork, molecular techniques, and bioinformatics to study fungal biodiversity and ecological roles.
Advising & Grants: He has mentored students like Jessie Uehling and collaborates with institutions like Oak Ridge National Laboratory and INRA (France) on DOE-funded projects. His lab organizes events like the Middle Atlantic States Mycology Conference (MASMC) and founded the Triangle Mycological Society.
Labs & Teams: The Vilgalys Lab hosts interdisciplinary research on fungal genomics, mycorrhizal symbiosis, and microbial communities. Collaborations include global networks studying fungal diversity and conservation.
