Jessie Uehling is an Associate Professor in the Department of Botany and Plant Pathology at Oregon State University (OSU). She leads a mycological research lab focusing on fungal symbioses, evolutionary genomics, and biodiversity conservation. Dr. Uehling also curates the fungal herbarium collection, advises governmental policies, and engages in community education initiatives. She holds affiliations with the OSU Ag Botany/Plant Path program and collaborates with Professors Posy Busby and Joey Spatafora in a shared research lab.
Education: PhD in Biology (Duke University, 2017), MSc (Humboldt State University, 2012), BSc (Humboldt State University, 2010).
Research interests include fungal-bacterial symbioses, plant-microbe interactions, and the evolutionary mechanisms shaping fungal diversity. Her work integrates genomics, metabolomics, and microfluidics to study symbiotic systems like Mortierella elongata and Burkholderia. She emphasizes applied outcomes such as truffle cultivation and psilocybin policy frameworks.
Notable accomplishments include NSF grants for biodiversity projects and the 2025 promotion to Associate Professor with tenure. She actively mentors students in mycology and evolutionary genomics, advising Kyle Mondron and Brandon Stairs. Her lab’s activities span fieldwork in Guyana to lab-based genomic studies, with a focus on global fungal biodiversity patterns.
Grants include the NSF Dimensions of Biodiversity grant and funding for lichen digitization. She serves on the Oregon Psilocybin Advisory Board and collaborates internationally on fungal systematics. Her outreach includes public lectures on mental health, foraging, and fungal ecology.
