Alija Mujic is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at California State University Fresno (CSUF), within the College of Science and Mathematics. He holds a Ph.D. in Botany and Plant Pathology from Oregon State University, alongside B.S. and B.A. degrees from UC Santa Cruz. His research focuses on fungal systematics, evolutionary biology, and ecology, particularly ectomycorrhizal symbioses and fungal secondary chemistry, leveraging computational methods for genomic analysis. He leads the Mujic Lab, which explores fungal biodiversity and mutualistic plant relationships. Recent work includes describing new truffle species (Tuber mujicii) in collaboration with international teams.
Education:
- B.S., Computer Science, UC Santa Cruz
- B.A., Environmental Studies, UC Santa Cruz
- Ph.D., Botany and Plant Pathology, Oregon State University
Research Interests: Dr. Mujic's work spans fungal systematics, phylogeography, and the ecological roles of mycorrhizal networks. His lab integrates genomic tools (transcriptomics, metagenomics) to study fungal evolution and antibiotic production. He emphasizes international collaboration, with fieldwork in North America, Latin America, Asia, and beyond.
Professional Contributions: Co-authored studies on truffle diversity and ectomycorrhizal symbiosis, including a 2022 publication in Mycologia. His research underscores the importance of fungal biodiversity for ecosystem stability and pharmaceutical discovery.
