Ella Thoen is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Oslo, affiliated with the Section for Genetics and Evolutionary Biology. She is actively involved in the EcoForest project, which investigates the long-term effects of modern forestry on biodiversity, microbial functions, and carbon processes in forest ecosystems.
Dr. Thoen completed her entire academic training at the University of Oslo, earning her Bachelor's degree in Biology in 2012, followed by a Master's degree in Biology with specialization in mycology in 2014. Her Master's research examined the fine-scale spatial structure of root-associated fungi of the ectomycorrhiza-forming plant Bistorta vivipara. She successfully defended her PhD dissertation titled "Functional versatility and diversity in the plant root mycobiome" on April 5, 2019.
Her research expertise centers on mycology with particular focus on root-associated fungi and their ecological versatility across different environments. Dr. Thoen employs advanced molecular techniques including long-read metabarcoding to study fungal communities in diverse ecosystems ranging from forests to alpine regions. Her work bridges field ecology with molecular approaches to understand how microbial communities respond to environmental changes and how these responses affect broader ecosystem functions.
Dr. Thoen's publication record demonstrates consistent contributions to fungal ecology, with recent work spanning fungal biogeography, community dynamics, and genomic approaches to fungal diversity. Her research shows particular strength in understanding ectomycorrhizal relationships and how climate variables shape microbial communities across environmental gradients.
She actively collaborates within multiple research frameworks including the Centre for Integrative Microbial Evolution (CIME), the EcoForest project, and the Oslo Mycology Group (OMG), contributing to interdisciplinary efforts in microbial ecology, forest science, and climate change research.
