Gavin Kernaghan is a Professor of Biology at Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU), specializing in fungal ecology and plant-microbe interactions. His research focuses on mycorrhizal fungi, fungal endophytes, and yeast communities in natural and agricultural systems. He leads the Atlantic Root Symbiosis Lab, exploring symbiotic relationships in boreal forests, vineyards, and green roof ecosystems.
Education: BSc, MSc (UBC), PhD (University of Alberta), with postdoctoral work at the University of Alberta, UQAM, and Agriculture Canada. His work bridges fundamental microbial ecology with applied research in wine production, vineyard biocontrol, and ecological restoration.
Key research areas include fungal succession in decomposing roots, yeast diversity in Nova Scotia vineyards, and the role of mycorrhizae in enhancing green roof functionality. Collaborations with local industries (e.g., craft breweries, Wine Association of Nova Scotia) highlight applied aspects of his microbial studies.
Lab activities include isolating native yeast strains for winemaking and studying ectomycorrhizal fungi in extreme environments like alpine tree lines. He also investigates fungal endophytes' potential for agricultural pest control and stress tolerance in plants.
