Professor Erika Harris is a leading scholar in nationalism studies and Eastern European politics at the University of Liverpool, holding the Bowes Chair in Politics since 2017. She has served as Head of the Politics Department (2010–2014) and currently directs the Europe and the World Centre (EWC), focusing on public engagement and academic collaboration. Her research examines nationalism, borders, and state policies in post-communist regions, with a focus on Central and Eastern Europe, the Balkans, and the post-Soviet space.
Her work bridges theoretical and empirical analyses of citizenship, sovereignty, and self-determination, with key publications including Nationalism: Theories and Cases (2009) and an upcoming book on nationalism in Central and Eastern Europe. She has secured significant grants from the British Academy and advises on accreditation and governance in European higher education institutions.
Prof. Harris actively contributes to policy debates via media commentary and international conferences, addressing issues like EU integration, kin-state policies, and conflict resolution. She supervises PhD students exploring nationalism, migration, and minority rights in contested regions.
