He holds affiliations with the Central and East European Studies department and coordinates the CEES Honours program and seminar series.
Cheskin's academic work examines minority discourses, integration policies, and the intersection of language, politics, and identity. He has conducted field research in Latvia, Estonia, and Ukraine, analyzing issues like horizontal citizenship in Narva and Russian-speaking communities' identity strategies.
His publications span peer-reviewed journals (e.g., Transactions of the Institute of British Geographers, Europe-Asia Studies) and books, including Russian-Speakers in Post-Soviet Latvia (2016). He teaches courses on post-communist Russia, nationalism, and qualitative methods, and advises on ethics for the School of Social and Political Sciences.
Cheskin actively engages in academic outreach, organizing annual research field trips to the Baltic States and serving on editorial and advisory boards. His work bridges critical area studies with empirical fieldwork, emphasizing relational geographies and power dynamics.
