Erika Carr, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Yale University’s Yale School of Medicine. She directs the Inpatient Psychology Service and Behavioral Intervention Service at the Connecticut Mental Health Center. Her work focuses on gender-sensitive and recovery-oriented care for women with serious mental illness, trauma-informed practices, and equity in mental health treatment.
Carr holds a PhD from the University of Tennessee (2011). Her research emphasizes the intersectional experiences of women, including trauma, poverty, and systemic oppression. She co-authored Women with Serious Mental Illness: Gender-Sensitive and Recovery-Oriented Care (Oxford University Press, 2021) and chairs the APA’s Committee for Women Who Experience Serious Mental Illness.
Her research interests include trauma-informed care, inpatient behavioral interventions, and addressing disparities in mental health outcomes for marginalized populations. Notable work includes integrating psychodynamic and recovery-oriented principles to reduce aggression in inpatient settings and advocating for patient-centered antipsychotic prescribing practices.
Carr has been recognized for her contributions, including an Excellence in Training Award for her Adult Community Mental Health internship program. She actively engages in policy advocacy, leveraging her role in the APA to advance global women’s mental health rights and social justice initiatives.
