Erika Boström is an Associate Professor at the Department of Science and Mathematics Education at Umeå University, Sweden. She is affiliated with Curiosum as a research fellow and contributes to the Umeå Mathematics Education Research Centre (UMERC). Her research focuses on formative assessment, teacher professional development, and enhancing students' problem-solving processes in mathematics. She actively collaborates with educators and communities to ensure practical relevance in her work. Erika teaches in teacher education programs, emphasizing courses on formative assessment and mathematics education. She also leads the Young Researchers Exhibition semifinal in Umeå through her role at Curiosum.
Erika holds a PhD in mathematics education and a teaching degree for mathematics, science, and biology. Her career includes over a decade as an upper secondary school teacher and roles in national test development for mathematics. Key research projects, such as the 2010–2015 study on formative assessment’s impact, highlight her commitment to practice-oriented research. She is a member of the 'Learning by Imitative and Creative Reasoning' research group and has contributed to numerous peer-reviewed publications analyzing formative assessment’s role in improving educational outcomes.
Her work bridges theory and practice, aiming to refine teaching strategies that support student learning. Erika’s research often examines how formative assessment practices can be implemented effectively, the conditions necessary for sustained educational change, and the motivational factors influencing teacher adoption of new methodologies.
