Erika Batdorf is an Associate Professor in the Department of Theatre at York University's School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design. She holds a BSc from Lesley College and has been recognized for her teaching excellence with awards such as the York Faculty of Fine Arts Dean’s Senior Teaching Award (2009/10) and the Most Outstanding Faculty Award at The Boston Conservatory (1996). Her work spans movement theatre, directing, and solo performance, with notable performances at venues like the Smithsonian Institute, Harvard University, and the Luminato Festival. She has also received four Dora Award nominations across performance, playwriting, and directing.
Education: BSc (Lesley College, Cambridge).
Research and creative interests include interdisciplinary performance, movement-based theatre, and solo performance art. Her work often explores themes of identity, cultural exchange, and physical storytelling. She has performed internationally, collaborating with institutions in Switzerland, Korea, Indonesia, and across North America. Her creative practice emphasizes innovation in movement theatre, as seen in her founding of the Batdorf School for Movement Theatre (1998) and her original productions like Poetic License and an adaptation of Peer Gynt for the Luminato Festival.
Awards and recognition highlight her contributions to pedagogy and performance: her teaching excellence is paired with a legacy of impactful solo works and direction. Recent projects include performances at the Festival of Fools in Toronto and a new solo work in development.
