Dr. Erik Swart is a Researcher at Justus Liebig University Giessen, affiliated with the Collaborative Research Centre (CRC) 138 'Dynamics of Security' subproject B01 - Public Peace since 2018. He previously held positions as Assistant Professor at the Open University of the Netherlands (2017–2018), Leiden University (2016–2018 as Web Editor), Utrecht University (2014–2018), and the University of Amsterdam (2011–2015). His academic career began with a PhD in History from the University of Amsterdam (2006), following studies at Groningen and Edinburgh Universities (1993–1998).
R. Swart specializes in Early Modern European military history, focusing on the Low Countries' military institutions, state formation, and the socio-political dynamics of warfare. His research explores topics such as military professionalization, taxation during conflicts, and the intersection of nobility culture with military practices.
