Eric Ziolkowski is the Helen H. P. Manson Professor of Bible and Head of the Religious Studies Department at Lafayette College. He also co-chairs the Medieval, Renaissance, and Early Modern Studies Program and co-leads the Humanities Center Initiative. His academic journey includes a Ph.D. (1987) and M.A. (1981) from the University of Chicago, and a B.A. (1980) from Dartmouth College.
His research focuses on the comparative study of religion and literature, the reception history of the Bible, and the intersection of religious thought with artistic expression. Notable contributions include editing the multi-volume Encyclopedia of the Bible and Its Reception and co-editing the Studies in Religion and the Arts series. He has authored over 50 articles and lectured globally in countries such as China, Denmark, and Australia.
Ziolkowski is a recipient of prestigious awards, including the Mary Louise Van Artsdalen Prize and the Thomas Roy and Lura Forrest Jones Award. He emphasizes the importance of religious studies in cultivating intellectual breadth and civil discourse, particularly in a liberal arts context.
In addition to scholarly work, he has mentored numerous students, many of whom have presented research at national conferences. His service to Lafayette includes leading the Religious Studies Department for 15 years and collaborating with the Skillman Library to enhance research resources for students and faculty.
