Eric Zakim is an Associate Professor in the School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures at the University of Maryland, with affiliations in the Middle East Studies Department, Cinema and Media Studies, and the Joseph and Rebecca Meyerhoff Program and Center for Jewish Studies. He also serves as a core faculty member at the Gildenhorn Institute for Israel Studies.
Educational Background:
- B.A. in History and B.Mus. in Music Composition, Oberlin College (1982)
- M.A. and Ph.D. in Comparative Literature, University of California, Berkeley (1996)
Research Interests: Modern Hebrew literature, Israeli culture, film studies, Marxist and post-structural theory, and the intersection of music and modernism. Current projects include Sounding Cultural Decline: Music and Degeneration Between Two Centuries (with Alexander Rehding) and Learning to See: Israeli Cinema and the History of Zionist Vision.
Teaching: Courses on Hebrew language/literature, Israeli cinema, gender in modern Hebrew culture, film narrative, and critical theory.
Labs/Teams: Involved with the Center for Literary and Comparative Studies and affiliated programs in Jewish and Israel Studies.
