Edith Covensky is an Associate Professor of Teaching at Wayne State University's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, affiliated with the Media Department in Classical and Modern Languages, Literatures, and Cultures. She specializes in Hebrew poetry, Israeli cinema, and Middle Eastern cultural studies. Born in Romania and raised in Israel, she served in the Israeli military as a code breaker before pursuing academia. Covensky holds advanced qualifications in French and Hebrew Literature from Wayne State University and has conducted research on 19th-century French theater and Tanaitic literature. She teaches courses on Modern Hebrew, Israeli culture, Middle Eastern film, and immigration studies, emphasizing interdisciplinary connections between language, art, and history. Her teaching evaluations reflect high student satisfaction due to her innovative pedagogical methods linking music theory to linguistic principles.
Her scholarly work includes over 36 poetry books written in multiple languages, including Hebrew, English, Arabic, Romanian, and Spanish. Key publications like Genesis (2019), A Reality that is Not (2023), and Portrait of a Poet (2020) explore themes of cultural identity, existential paradoxes, and artistic authenticity. She also edits the Israeli literary journal Pseifas and contributes film critiques to the Annual Jewish Film Festival of Metro Detroit.
