Nili Gold is a Professor of Modern Hebrew Language & Literature at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Arts & Sciences. She specializes in Hebrew literature, particularly focusing on authors such as Yehuda Amichai, Yoel Hoffmann, Lea Goldberg, and Dahlia Ravikovitch. Her work bridges literary analysis with cultural history, as seen in her book Haifa: City of Steps (2017), which explores architecture, history, and literature of Haifa. Gold has also been active in academic initiatives like co-founding the Middle East Film Festival at Penn (2010) and participating in the nonprofit organization dedicated to Aharon Appelfeld’s legacy (2023). Her research emphasizes biographical and cultural dimensions of Hebrew poetry and prose.
Gold’s publications span over three decades, with notable works including Yehuda Amichai: The Making of Israel’s National Poet (2008, translated into Hebrew and Chinese) and co-authored To Walk the Inner Streets (2024). Her articles often analyze poetic structures, intertextuality, and the intersection of personal and national narratives. Courses taught include Israeli literature and film, autobiographical studies, and Middle Eastern literatures in translation.
Her recent work combines textual analysis with interdisciplinary approaches, such as linking Hoffmann’s writings to Japanese death poetry and exploring Amichai’s biographical dimensions. Gold’s contributions to Hebrew literary studies highlight both classical and contemporary themes, maintaining a focus on cultural preservation and academic innovation.
